The Little Black Slip

The little black slip dress has quickly become a staple item in my wardrobe. Not only is it so versatile, but the silhouette is flattering on every body-type. The one that I've been styling the most is this New Look slip - I decided to size up in this mostly because I wanted it to flow nicely over my hips (if you're a curvy gal like me then you'll know that the struggle is real). Due to my hourglass figure, I often find myself belting things at the waist in order to define the smallest part of my body, this of course calls for a multitude of statement belts - the perfect accessory to dress up a plain black slip! I like to create lines within an outfit like this, mirroring the cinched waist belt with a contrasting neck scarf to add a pop of colour - match with a statement lip and you're ready to go!
For a daytime casual look, I usually pair it with a denim jacket and trainers. When transitioning into evening, a chic leather jacket, bold earrings and some heels (or in my case, loafers!) is a fab look for sipping a few cocktails at the bar! When done correctly, and paired with the right colourful accessories, black is classy, stylish, and above all, chic.
Slip dresses are not only a classy outfit on their own, but the opportunity for layering is something I always use to my advantage. In the winter maybe I'll wear a white turtleneck underneath, or maybe a dinner shirt tied at the waist - often I find myself pairing graphic t-shirts over the top and knotting them at the waist, turning a dress into a skirt and utilising the full versatility of the garment.

90's fashion trends seem to have made a massive come-back in the last year or so, therefore you shouldn't really struggle to find a slip on the high street, they seem to be everywhere! Although my favourite staple has got to be my black dress, the different colours and patterns that are widely available now have definitely caught my attention.

This black and pink polka-dot slip dress I bought in Zara a few years ago, and I have to say, it is my go-to summer outfit. Super stretchy, very comfortable and can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. I definitely tend to wear this one more in summer, with a chunky belt and my Dr Marten sandals - often I'll tie satin shirt in that matching hot-pink over the top to elevate the outfit to another level. Again, so bloody versatile!!
In fact, whilst writing this, I feel inspired to try and transition this bold piece into a Winter staple as well... maybe try layering a hot pink turtle neck underneath...? Or even a chunky wool roll-neck jumper over the top with some Docs...? I've been watching Trinny Woodall (you know Trinny, from Trinny and Susannah) on YouTube a lot recently - wow does she have incredible style... anyway, my point is that I just know that Trinny would match a pair of hot-pink thick tights under this number, which would look pretty epic... although I'm not sure I'm that brave just yet... but I'll keep you posted ;)
